Description

New York Ghost Walk

In traditional belief and fiction, a ghost is the soul or spirit of a deceased person or animal that can appear, in visible form or other manifestation, to the living. Descriptions of the apparition of ghosts vary widely from an invisible presence to translucent or barely visible wispy shapes, to realistic, life-like visions. The belief in manifestations of the spirits of the dead is widespread, dating back to animism or ancestor worship in pre-literate cultures. Certain religious practices—funeral rites, exorcisms, and some practices of spiritualism and ritual magic—are specifically designed to appease the spirits of the dead. Ghosts are generally described as solitary essences that haunt particular locations, objects, or people they were associated with in life, though stories of the phantom armies, ghost trains, phantom ships, and even ghost animals have also been recounted. As one of the great urban centres of the modern world, New York City has one of the densest concentrations of paranormal phenomena, and this spooky walking tour brings the sometimes terrifying otherworldliness of this great city to life, or should we say death.....m...mwa...mwah....mwahhahahahahah!

Itinerary

  • Mark Twain's Ghost Just one of many ghost stories from New York's House of Death
  • Potter's Field The mass grave under one of New York's most beautiful parks
  • Ghost Pyromania! Ghosts have set fire to this famous restaurant more than once, and not because of the service!
  • The Ghost Poet Often seen sitting at his favorite corner table of this West Village watering hole, before vanishing, obviously.
  • The Vice President's Poltergeist Causing way too much mischief now he's out of office!
  • Edgar Allen Poe No ghost tour would be complete without him
  • Gay Street Phantom Do deceased flappers and dead drunks still haunt this quiet little street?
  • Hangman's Tree The oldest tree in manhattan has seen quite a few hangings in its time
  • The Ghost of Roosevelt's dog Roams the Park in search of the thirty-second president of the United States...
  • There are many more ghouls and ghost stories in store on this spine chilling tour!
  1. “Village Ghost Tour Outstanding!”

by Stephen M (a TripAdvisor Member) on 1 Jul 2014

I can heartily endorse the Ghost Tour in Greenwich Village and Sean's informative description of the ghosts, events, and locations featured on the tour. We saw both well-known sites (the Hanging Tree in Washington Square Park) and lesser-known haunted sites (ex. several speakeasies). Sean was well informed, polite, and personable. The only thing missing from the tour was the appearance of an actual ghost!

  2. “Great NY Tours Greenwich Village Ghost Tour”

Even though it was frigid out we all had a fascinating time on the Great NY Tours Greenwich Village Ghost Tour. I thought I know NYC and the Village quite well but I learned more than a few things during this tour. Interwoven in the tour were quizzes on NYC history and pop culture. Marcy was our guide and she did a fine job keeping us entertained and informed - and keeping our minds off of the very low temps. We visited the Edgar Allan Poe home, the hanging tree in Washington Square Park and other points of interest related to the lives of Alexander Hamilton, Aaron Burr, Jimmy Walker among many others. Recommended........

  4. “New York Ghost Walk - Fantastic!”

    by drmike99 (a TripAdvisor) on 4 Jan 2014

Just did the New York Ghost Walk tour offered by Great New York Tours and had a fantastic time. Would highly recommend this to both visitors to New York as well as to locals interested in the history of New York (and/or ghosts!). Jackie our tour guide was very interesting and knowledgeable about the ghoulish stories behind the haunted buildings and areas of the neighborhood. She also did a nice job of engaging with all of the folks on the tour, which included a nice mix of couples, families and seniors. The tour itself starts in Washington Square park and lasts approximately 2 hours. So many interesting stories combined with a leisurely walking tour of some of the most beautiful and historic neighborhoods! Will definitely do this again with friends.

  5. “Not so scary but very interesting!”

by LaraEatsBacon (a TripAdvisor Member) on 4 Jan 2014

It was the perfect night for a haunted walk through Greenwich Village- the moon was full, the air was calm, and we gathered around our tour guide under the arch in Washington Square Park. I have been on Ghost tours in Scotland and London that were very creepy so I think it is safe to say my "Haunt" bar is set a little high. That being said, this tour is not scary at all. It is, however, an extremely interesting history walk. Our guide was knowledgable and a great story teller- our group was quite large and he kept everyone's interest as we covered quite a bit of ground around the neighborhood. Many of the stops focused on literary figures- Poe, Thomas- and it was really fun to imagine old New York as we walked along. But don't expect to be scared- it is not that type of tour. Some advice- wear sneakers. There are no bathroom breaks but I was able to sneak away to a Starbucks during one stop and then catch up. A unique New York experience for locals and tourists alike!

  6. “Highly recommend the Ghost Tour”

by UnaFee (a TripAdvisor Member) on 4 Jan 2014

I went on this tour last Saturday night 11/2/13. I had purchased the tickets on Amazon Local (2 for $25). I loved it. The tour guide Sean was great, he waited until everyone was together before speaking to the group. The group was quite large so he gave us trivia questions along the way to keep the group together. Along with hearing about the ghosts inhabiting certain buildings he pointed out many other points of interest along the way including the "Friends" building which I was particularly excited about. I know I will be taking trips back to a few of the haunteds bars along the route to try to experience a ghost 1st hand.
Great tour, great guide and interesting facts and history along the way. I highly recommend this. There is a lot of walking involved so do wear comfortable shoes.

  8. “Fun, Historic”

by Leanne S (a TripAdvisor Member) on 3 Jan 2014

Jessie was our tourguide on October 30. Great gal, fun energy, great attitude, good storyteller. The tour itself lasted about 1.5 to 2 hours. I can't recall for sure, but we stopped at about 8 or 9 spots where Jessie gave us the history, applicable ghost story if available, and a trivia question. Very fun. I asked if there were more spots in the west village that she knew to be haunted, and the answer was there there are few, possibly only the ones we heard that evening. Very cool, wish there were more, but..... how many ghosts can you find in one place?

Bathroom stop and food along the way. Non-strenuous walking

  9. “Ghost Tour is a MUST!”

    by dan374656 (a TripAdvisor Member) on 6 Oct 2013

I recently took the NYC Ghost Tour, and I can't recommend it enough! Our tour guide (make sure you ask for Jessie!) was informative, funny, on point and organized. You learn a boatload about local downtown haunts (both institutional and ghostly), and you even get to spot a bunch of other iconic and interesting info/sights about New York City, from the "Friends" building to the "Stuart Little" house. Add this to your must-do list when visiting!

    by Alli24NY (a TripAdvisor Member) on 8 Aug 2013

I purchased the groupon for the ghost walk ($25 for two people) and went this past Saturday night with my boyfriend. I'm really glad we did! I've been on a lot of ghost walks around the country, and this is one of the better ones I've been on. The man leading the tour was extremely smart and knowledgeable of the city. He gave us so much information and kept us engaged for the over two hour walk. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes, there is a lot of walking involved! I highly recommend this tour.

  12. Not a ghost tour, but a great history tour

by Jen on 3 Aug 2013

Alex is a great tour guide with a great sense of humor. The tour was not a tour ghost tour, but a tour of the Village with some ghost lore. I am a die hard amateur ghost hunter, so if you are looking for that, skip this tour. If you are in love with American history take this tour. Some suggestions for future tours: talk more about the individual Lenape cultures that lived in the Village, discuss the role of slavery in building the Village. Other than that take this tour and learn interesting facts about NYC.
  13. Great tour

by Robert McManus on 14 Jul 2013

My family and I went on your Ghost Tour last night and I have to tell you we all had a great time. Alex was extremely knowledgeable with lots of stories and facts, He did a great job moving around such a large group (30?) with no problems. Everything was very interesting, even for a New Yorker having lived here for 50 years. I would highly recomend this tour. Thank you very much !

Had such an amazing time with ALEX, our tour guide, or as a male stranger walking by said (I'm paraphrasing) "THE MOST COOLEST LOOKING TOUR GUIDE EVER". I would've said "THE DREAMIEST LOOKING TOUR GUIDE EVER". His height, European accent, and laid back charisma made this New Yorker enjoy and learn a few things about her city. Very informative on the history and little tidbits about the East Village to Greenwich Village you would never have known about have you not been on this walking tour. The 2 hours flew by and with that the BEST GHOST WALK EVER!
